John Chisum
The John Chisum Sculpture is featured in the "The
Process" section of this
website. There one can see how the Maquette was scaled up to its monumental
size. Here are a few more pictures showing the detail and feel
of the sculpture.
John Chisum was a cattle baron in Concho County Texas. Chisum not only
ranched but also was buyer of cattle to feed Confederate armies stationed
west of the Mississippi River. Born in Tennessee, he came to the
Republic of Texas in the 1830s.
After the war, Chisum developed ranches in New Mexico and was a
bystander in the Lincoln County Wars of Billy the Kid and other desperados.
The finshed monument was unveiled March 24, 2001 in Pioneer
Plaza, Roswell New Mexico.
